COVID Attendance Letter

 Dear Families,

We know that this year has presented new and unexpected challenges when it comes to attending school regularly.  It is very important to follow guidelines and stay home if your child is experiencing symptoms or under quarantine. However, regular attendance at school when children are healthy is still very important.

●     A consistent and predictable routine for learning every day gives children an assuring sense of stability which many lost when school buildings closed.

●     Chronic absence, which is missing 10% (about 2 days a month) or more, leads to students not reading proficiently by third grade, course failure in middle school and dropout in high school.

●     Being absent is a lost opportunity to learn and build relationships that directly affect being successful in school.

If your student has to stay at home, it is important that if your student is not at school they are still engaged in learning.  We would like to make sure that the process is clear and as easy to follow as possible.   This is George Washingtons’s procedure to access learning for your student while they are unable to be at school.

Missing School Work Expectations

○     All school work can be found on Canvas. All work is expected to be turned in through Canvas.

○     Students are expected to work from home on Canvas during their quarantine as long as they are feeling well enough to do so. The more they are able to work from home, the easier it will be to catch up once they return to school.

○     If a student needs access to a computer or internet, they can contact Kenlee East at the contact information listed below.

○     There will be a 2 week extension on missing work for students from the day they return from quarantine.

Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!

We are looking forward to welcoming back students to classrooms on August 20th. Ogden School District’s Keeping Ogden Healthy plan is being developed with input from students, parents, teachers and staff. It will include planning and preparation around five main areas:

  1. Sanitation & Hygiene
  2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  3. Social/Physical Distancing
  4. Student Engagement
  5. Student & Staff Well-Being

The safety and wellbeing of students and staff is a top priority. The registration process includes an opportunity to share student medical conditions that may affect attendance and/or participation in their educational programs or could indicate that a student is high-risk. If you are interested in enrolling your student in Ogden Online (our online learning program) rather than attending school in person, you will receive an email with instructions once you complete the registration process.

George Washington High School is focused around innovative learning that ranges from direct instruction to online learning to project based learning. With a school capacity of 200, class sizes are small, which provides teachers the opportunity to work with each student individually to create a more deliberate and specific plan for the student’s learning outcome, graduation and future goals beyond graduation. GWHS teachers and administration challenge their students to ARISE, which is creating an environment where they take accountability for their actions, respect others and themselves, stay involved in the community, promote safety and strive for excellence.

Key Elements for Success: Structured environment that promotes individual needs. Project Based Learning with hands-on projects to enhance skills. Six mini-terms per school year to measure progress and show achievement. Partnerships with local community organizations such as United Way to provide support and education to students with special circumstances. After school athletic programs offered each month to enhance students outdoor activities.

90 Ninety 1+ Club

At George Washington we understand that in order to graduate from High School,
you need to attended. We have put together a program that may help
motivate you on those days you may not want to come to school.

90 Ninety 1+ Club is here to help! If you are at school 90% of the time,
on time to class 90% of the time and earn 1.25 credits for the term, you will
qualify to go on a field trip. This is our way of saying thanks to you for making the
effort to come to school and work toward your success and graduation.

Field Trips include: Movies at Sundance Film Festival,
Hansen Planetarium, Nickelcade,
Hogle Zoo and GET AIR Trampoline Park
